Visiting Siem Reap

Sights From Siem ReapSiem Reap is the historical jewel of South-East Asia. It was once the capital of great Khmer Empire. The city carries all the magical and glorious history with her. You can smell the history on the buildings, food, even on people. She hosts an ancient and great culture which is a haven for us, travellers.

Also Cambodian coasts around Sihanoukville is a favorite of many surfers from all around the world due its remarkably big waves. The capital Phnom Penh is a more conventional city so preferred for nightlife and cultural events.

Beautiful Photos From Bangkok

Hey guys, I made a video of some of the photos that I took in Bangkok. I hope you’ll like it:

I’m planning of doing the same for Siem Reap so stay tuned 🙂

Accomodation in Siem Reap

Things are even cheaper in Siem Reap than Bangkok. This includes accomodation.

You can rent hostels as little as 2.5 dollars a night. But in Siem Reap and rest of Cambodia, I recommend you to stay in hostels that are a little bit more expensive. For this case difference in price does tranlate to difference in quality. Better yet, book a private room.

Like in Bangkok you should pay attention to cleanliness and location. Location is especially important in Siem Reap because there are some temples you should definitely see at sunrise and sunset, so the timing is vital.  You can check hostels from www.hostelworld.com and also from www.hostelbookers.com, the two very useful hostel booking sites.

In Siem Reap, I stayed in Red Piano hostel with which I was very satisfied. It is right in the center of the city and is really clean and cheap.

By the way Siem Reap, the temple haven of South-East Asia, hosts the biggest religious building in the world: Angkor Wat (I’ll write more about it soon).

How to Book Cheap Flights

How to Book Cheap Flights

I was really lucky about this. I was looking through flight tickets to Bangkok in www.edreams.com and the tickets were about 1000 dollars! I googled around so that I could book a cheap flight but I couldn’t find anything. I was close to giving up when I stumbled upon this site.

The site belongs to a guy who wrote a book about secrets to booking a cheap flight. I bought the book and some tips in it really worked. I recommend you to buy it. The book is around 20 dollars and it made me save 200 dollars in my first air travel. I’ve been using the tips ever since.

Transportation in Bangkok

I mention how to book cheap flights in another article but in the city you can use Tuk Tuks. I recommend haggling before getting on one; They usually try to rip off tourists. Tuk Tuks are also good if you are new to the city, they can take you anywhere you ask.

Taxis are another cheap option but unlike Tuk Tuks, they can’t navigate around the terrible traffic in Bangkok. You can haggle before with the taxi drivers too but when they use a taximeter it is really cheap so you can be at ease with them.

There are also busses, which i don’t recommend because of the terrible traffic, and sky train.

Bangkok Sky Train

Sky Train

Sky train is one of the best ways to get around in the city. There is a site with information of stops and how to buy tickets for sky train, in english: http://www.bts.co.th/en/index.asp. Obviously unaffected by Bangkok’s ever-busy traffic. Plus you can take some good photos of the city.

Nightlife in Bangkok

Of course each night begins in Khao San Road in Bangkok. This street is something to see with thousands of people from different cultures drinking, meeting, chatting and socializing. There are lots of backpackers there; you can get great tips and have great conversations with fellow travellers. This is where the fun begins. My only advice is go to where the night takes you.

If you want to shop I recommend Ratchaprasong Zone. This place is filled with stores. If you visit Bangkok around Christmas or New Year this street is decorated with thousands of lights, it is really something to see.

There are all sorts of nightclubs and bars in Bangkok. If you want to have fun Bangkok style you should see the notorious Sukhumvit Zone. Believe me, this street lives up to its fame. Specially in Thong Lor Street you can find some good nightclubs and bars.

If you just wanna relax and bowl or see a movie Siam Center is the place to go. There are lots of malls in this area filled with numerous kinds of entertainment.

Sightseeing in Bangkok

The thing about Bangkok is that it is so big that you can’t see everything in one visit. I’ll briefly tell about my favorite places to see. Also most of air travel in Thailand is from Bangkok so

First, go to a tourist info and grab a map of the city. This will give you an idea of where the places to sightsee are.

You should definitely see National Museum. It is an opportunity to get explore the thai art and history.

Wat Pho is really stunning. It is one of the oldest temples and schools in the city. It is famous for its Reclining Buddha Statue which is about 32 meters long.

The Marble Temple is another must-see place. It is one of the most modern temples in the city. You will learn the meaning of the word tranquility there.

The Floating Market is a floating bazaar where vendors sell their products in their little boats. It is somewhat outside the city. The busses take off from around the National Palace, usually in the morning.

Wat Arun is a wonderful sight to behold, both from inside and outside. Its name can be translated to “The Temple of Dawn”. Trust me, you would want to find out why by yourself!

Tiger Temple is not as famous as the other places. But that was one of my most thrilling experinces ever. It was a 3 hours drive from Bangkok but it was worth it. Budhist monks and some volunteers around the world keep, feed, clean tigers in this budhist tample. And they let tourists touch them. You can have a picture with them too. There are real good tours from city you can join, visiting tiger temple. Most of them start early in the morning.

Accomodation in Bangkok

Accomodation in Bangkok

Accomodation in Bangkok

Everything in Bangkok is cheap. Really cheap. Accomodation is no exception. You can rent a bed in a hostel for about 4 dollars a night. I recommend you to look through www.hostelworld.com for booking purposes. Many people book private rooms (which are around 9 dollars). If you are uncomfortable sleeping in the same room with strangers,  I’d recommend this option.

You can spare more money for accomodation if you can book a cheap flight; air travel was the major portion of my expenses in this trip.

Personally, I preferred booking dorm rooms in Europe and private rooms in Asia. But let me tell you, staying in a mixed dorm makes it much easier to meet people.

In Bangkok I stayed in NapPark Hostel in Khao San Road. Its location is pretty good and it is clean; I’d definitely recommend it. In my opinion when you are choosing a hostel, there two things you have to consider: How well it is located and how clean it is. Location is important because the less time you spend on the road, the more time you spend having time in this magnificent city; You don’t want to call your nights of early in Bangkok. The cleanliness of hostel speaks volumes about its quality. You’ll also have an easier time sleeping and enjoying your stay in Bangkok, if you are free from the distractions of a filthy room.
